Kerala Dinesh Beedi Co-operative Society has
donated Rs.1 lakh to the People’s Mission for Social Development for the spread
of libraries in backward areas. People’s Mission Chairman Dr.V.Sivadasan MP
received the amount from Kerala Dinesh Chairman MK Dinesh Babu at a function
held at Kannur University Thavakara Campus. Dr. V Sivadasan MP stated that
Kerala Dinesh’s position will wholeheartedly promote the broad goal of
empowering public spaces.
He recalled that beedi workers were those
who made newspaper reading a part of their profession.
When work starts in the morning, one of the
workers will be assigned to read the newspaper. He would read the newspaper
aloud to everyone. Everyone would put aside one from their pack of beedis for
the laborer reading the newspaper. So they made reading the main part of the
profession. He added that the collective support of Dinesh Beedi workers is
behind many libraries that have grown up in Kannur.
District Collector S Chandrasekhar IAS, District
Library Council President Mukundan Madathil, EK Somasekaran, Tourism Department
Deputy Director KS Shine, DTPC Secretary Jijesh Kumar and Dinesh Sangam
Secretary M Kishore Kumar were also present on the occasion.
